The Lagoon 55 was the first Lagoon to be launched, designed by naval architects Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP design). This model picks up the legacy of the old 55 and is renewed with the contribution of Patrick le Quément for the exterior design and Italian Nauta Design for the interiors.
The spaces are the main feature of the new Lagoon 55, the livable space on deck is immense thanks to the different conception of the boat, more “platform” than an old style two hull. And then there is the flybridge, really XXL, with 2.30 meters of height of the canopy. The Lagoon 55 is a real villa on the sea, with solutions more like a megayacht than a “normal” catamaran.
Lagoon 55 – Exterior
As soon as we got on board we noticed how, compared to the smaller models such as the 52F and 52S (which the 55 replaces in the range), the access stairs to the deck have been reduced in size and developed at an angle: this creates much more space in the decks that now become livable: on the model we visited, on one side there was a reclining seat, on the other a nice barbecue ready to use. Once on deck, we immediately understand how the maximization of spaces has been the leitmotiv of the project: we must always keep in mind that we are on a 16.56 x 9 meters, not on a maxi. The stern living area has a sofa on the starboard side where 12 people can comfortably sit around a modular dining table and a sun bed. On the port side, there is a sink with built-in icemaker, a sun sofa and a ladder – very comfortable, to be honest – that leads to the flybridge. When sailing, the boat behaves exactly as one would expect from a 16-metre catamaran that displaces (empty) 27 tons, with a 107-sqm battened mainsail and a 74-sqm self-tacking jib. Stable and simple, though obviously less responsive than a monohull.
Lagoon 55 – Interior
Below deck you can fully appreciate the work of Nauta Design: in the starboard hull, aft, is the king size master cabin, with shower stall and separate bathroom. You can choose all the colors and essences you want. The height in the cabin is over two meters, the spaces are certainly not lacking. In the bow there is a guest cabin with shower box and integrated bathroom. Inside, passing through the living area that is separated from the square only by a sliding door, you get to the huge square, on the left the chart table (a novelty, on the 52 is central to the bow), forward C-shaped sofa and coffee table, to starboard the huge and equipped L-shaped kitchen (there is also a bar area). Everything, of course, has a sea view thanks to the 360° windows that give the impression of being outside.
