For Nautor’s Swan, 48 is a magic number. Under this number one of the most iconic Swans in history was born in 1971: the legendary Swan 48. Designed by the best yacht designer of all time, Sparkman & Stephens of New York, this iconic yacht has won some of the most prestigious offshore races.

However, racing was not the main purpose: like every Swan, it was meant to be a perfect family cruising sailboat, capable of sailing around the world in total safety and comfort.

Following the same principles, in 1995 Germán Frers designed a new Swan 48 with the same level of grace and performance as the original. Today, almost forty years after the original one, it is time for another mythical Swan 48.

Swan 48 – Exterior

Like every design that comes off our drawing board, the new Swan 48 was designed with heart and passion, but rather than just acting on the flash of a moment of inspiration, this new Nautor model is the result of a rational brief based on market analysis and experience.

The Swan 48 is a new model of sailboat created by the work of a team of experts, and offers the best specifications and solutions of equipment and materials available on the market. Equipment and tanks are located at the bottom of the hull and close to the longitudinal center of buoyancy. The angle of positive stability is on the order of 120 degrees. Displacement reflects the quality of construction and equipment dedicated to providing the best comfort on board.

A yacht that will be safe, a pleasure to sail, will have gentle movement at sea due to the stability of form and moderate ballast of the three available keel options, standard, shallow and racing. Following the latest larger models, the new design shows no forcing in the stern sections; the maximum beam has been brought up to the transom in combination with a double rudder arrangement. The reduced draft of the positively controlled rudder and the length of the water lines in trim are some of the advantages of this design.

A massive, well-lit interior volume on this Nautor yacht, where each of the three cabins and two toilets, which include separate showers, has been carefully developed. There are separate areas on deck for relaxation and sail handling. All halyards and sails are controlled from the cockpit, and lines are stowed in special compartments. Weather protection is provided by the spray hood mounted in combination with the bimini. The aft locker is large enough to stow a fully inflated 2.80-meter tender. For sailors interested in racing, there is a performance package that includes a racing keel, square mainsail, carbon fiber mast and rigging, long bowsprit, and upgraded deck equipment.

Deck

The deck plan is designed for maximum efficiency, safety and comfort. The deck design, particularly the deckhouse, is the most relevant part of a boat in terms of aesthetics and character. We have always paid close attention to this at Nautor, and the “wedge” deckhouse design has been a trademark since its introduction in 1971 with the original S&S-designed Swan 48. The design of the new Swan 48 represents the latest generation of wedge-shaped deckhouse to evolve from that original design. It is designed with a combination of soft curves and faceted surfaces, presenting a new style but still in the family feeling of its big sisters, the Swan 65 and 78. It also introduces the distinctive ‘Eagle’s Eye,’ a long front that gives the entire deckhouse the appearance of a raptor’s intense gaze.

The cockpit, well protected by deep sides throughout its length, has the typical functional layout of a Swan yacht with a bow area dedicated to guests, fully protected by spray hoods and bimini, a central section where all sailing equipment is concentrated with winches within easy reach of the helmsman, and a stern area dedicated to sunbathing and direct access to the sea through the opening platform. Safety is always a priority for Swan. To this end, a special solution was developed for the main sheet to prevent it from crossing the entire cockpit and reduce the danger of an accidental jibe. As an option, the platform can also provide access to the tender garage. Other areas, such as the front sunbathing area with cushions well integrated into a recessed part of the deckhouse, are dedicated to comfort at sea.

Interior

Maintaining a sense of classic style and elegance, Swan 48 offers an interior layout that provides a clear feeling of space and volume. The three-cabin layout includes the owner in the bow with a private head, a VIP cabin to starboard and a guest cabin to port, both aft. The two areas are a statement of comfort and space, both with a completely separate shower compartment. Located in the center of the boat, the main salon is open, with a C-shaped sofa and natural light radiating from three different levels, giving brightness to the entire space.

The chart table on the starboard side, to be chosen in three different layouts. The kitchen configuration offers all-around freedom in all conditions, with a household-sized refrigerator and valuable storage volumes. The soundproof engine room provides good accessibility and includes a dedicated space for an optional generator set. For styling and finishes, Swan 48 features three different moods proposed by interior designer Misa Poggi: Northern Light, embodying the typical Swan style; Blue Eyes inspired by Scandinavian design; and Red Velvet, reflecting the warm atmosphere of Latin countries. These styles create a special atmosphere and energy, determined by the relationship between elements and materials.
