Discovering iconic yachting chronographs since 1892
TAG Heuer: a beautiful sea story to live on your wrist
TAG Heuer, a Swiss chronograph brand formerly partnered with Intrepid in the 1960s, more recently with Oracle, winner of the America’s Cup in San Francisco in 2013, the TAG Heuer VelaCup and the 151-miglia – Cetilar Trophy, cultivates the passion, innovation, spirit of freedom and adventure of Sailing.
Since 1892, when TAG Heuer patented one of the world’s first waterproof sports chronograph cases, Sailing has inspired the company to push the limits.
TAG Heuer Aquaracer 300M is the “Dontcrackunderpressure” series of divers for professional diving in watch or chronograph versions, achieving the highest level of reliability, precision and prestige, with resistance to a pressure equal to that which develops at a depth of 300 meters.Discover our savoir-faire!
Aquaracer collection draws inspiration from sailing and water sports
At 17:27 and 39 seconds on Monday, September 18, 1967, Intrepid won the fourth race against Damie Pattie’s Australians and won the America’s Cup in Newport, Rhode Island. It is an important date not only for sailing, but also for watchmaking.
Yes, because it was a Heuer timepiece that made an important contribution to the victory of the American 12-Meter International Tonnage skippered by skipper Emil “Bus” Mosbacher Jr. To be precise, as the chronicles of the time report, the crew was issued the Heuer Aquastar Regate, which later proved to be a crucial instrument during the races. Until proven otherwise, this was the first appearance of a watchmaker in a sailing competition of this level.
A milestone that was not reached by chance but represents the consecration of a path that began in 1895 when Heuer patented one of the first waterproof cases for pocket watches. It is precisely the world of sports with particular reference to automobile and sailing competitions that has represented, and still represents, for the Saint-Imier Maison an extraordinary research laboratory for developing increasingly reliable and precise solutions.
At the end of the 1950s, well before the feat accomplished with Intrepid, the watchmaker had proposed itself on the market with the Yacht Timer, which, to all intents and purposes, can be called the forerunner of the modern racing watch. Tested to withstand depths of up to 60 meters the Ref. 33,512 made headlines because it was developed involving even the best American skippers of the time. It could not have been otherwise for a Maison whose successes in watchmaking are due precisely to an approach far from the mainstream and outside the box.
The secret ingredient in this winning recipe is called innovation
The same behind the Aquaracer collection range of timepieces that further reinforces the link between TAG Heuer and the sea. First appearing on the scene in 2003, the line took little time to win the pulse and, more importantly, the trust of many water sports enthusiasts.
In 2016 the Aquaracer, while keeping some staples such as the unidirectional unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel in the shape of a dodecagon and the screw-down case back engraved with a scaphander, introduces some important updates. Starting with the case diameter changed from 41mm to the current 43mm. Also on the ceramic bezel that has undergone a slight restyling, engraved and lacquered silver numerals have found their place. Also new is the presence of a magnifying glass at 3 o’clock at the date window. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment protects a dial offered in blue and black tones on which hand-applied polished faceted indexes stand out; polished faceted hour and minute hands; while the seconds hand features a colored tip with SuperLuminova™.
Water-resistant to 300 meters, the Aquaracer is powered by the celebrated Caliber 5, a self-winding mechanical movement. Rounding out the features of this timepiece is the option of pairing it with a polished and satin-finished, 3-row steel bracelet with a polished steel folding clasp.
In short, the ideal tool to wear on your wrist to experience the sea and sailing without compromising.
