Franchini Shipyard, 70 years of history at sea
The history of the Franchini Shipyard unravels for over 70 years and starts from a small artisan shipyard built on the port of Riccione thanks to the determination of the Shipwright Michele Franchini, known as "Guido", who in 1946 decided to set up his own business by starting a business of building small fishing boats and boats at the service of the nascent seaside tourism. In this small shed was born the"beach cutter"; a hull inspired by the Flying Dutchman type racing dinghies that thanks to the flat bottom could reach the beach of Riccione and load the waiting tourists. Some of these boats are still in service along the beaches of Romagna and one has been included in the permanent collection of the Maritime Museum of Cesenatico.

In the shipyard of Riccione in 1968, almost by chance, “Guido” Franchini and Norberto Ferretti met, who had asked to transform an old wooden fishing boat into a pleasure motorsailer. The boat succeeded so well that “Guido” and Norberto decided to expose it to the Genoa Boat Show, gaining a good success. From the association was born what will become one of the largest groups in the nautical world.
In 1977 his son Massimo, a young naval architect, joined the company. Without denying its artisan roots, he transformed it into a modern shipyard aimed at the production of offshore cruise sailing boats appreciated all over the world. The new graduate architect brings his culture of young designer anxious to verify in facts his ability to interpret the needs of an increasingly large and demanding clientele.
The collaboration with Doug Peterson
Massimo Franchini, after trying his hand with several custom projects from 47 to 60 feet, decides to focus on design and coordination of new ideas. With the dimensional growth of the boats and the shipyard and the opening of new foreign markets, the collaboration with Doug Peterson, “The Genius,” was born, after three consecutive victories in the America’s Cup.
This collaboration will definitively consolidate Franchini’s fame as a manufacturer of cruising boats, without limits, beautiful, reliable, comfortable, but all absolutely different, thanks to an in-depth design of all possible variations and the unification of the naval platform, leaving the owner the widest choice of everything that does not affect performance and quality. From the exclusive production of magnificent sailing yachts, the Franchini shipyard moves on to produce timeless motoryachts, without neglecting the technological aspects and the importance of research.
This led him, in 1996, thanks to Massimo’s intuition and vision, to use, first in Europe, the SCRIMP (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process); the technology of fiberglass vacuum infusion for the production of hulls and superstructures, forever revolutionizing the way to produce boats in full respect of the environment with the highest quality standards.
The evolution
Massimo is not content to continue to produce the “traditional” motorsailer but, also in virtue of a positive trend in the motoryacht segment, in 2004 he “invented” the Italian lobster and put on the market Emozione 55, universally recognized as the most elegant Mediterranean lobster boat.
With Mia 63 and its articulated range, Massimo Franchini defines the new frontier of the 21st century, for a yachting at the highest performance levels, more and more aware, more and more environmentally friendly, more and more “owner-friendly,” like a dress, like a villa, for those who do not accept compromises and want “his Franchini.”
